DOES GOOD DESIGN MATTER?

WHAT HAPPENED TO SPENDING MONEY ON GOOD DESIGN?

DIGITAL NEWS  story done in a semi interactive way.
The images held my interest but the text was boring.
Why is it that good typography is not addressed on the web in news articles?
Images are an interesting way to engage the viewer  but the design is still like a magazine article and all hunkered on the left side of the browser

BEST CHILDREN'S EBOOK YET!! - a shame I don't own an ipad -

Simple interactivity that is connected throughout the page.
Gotta love Flash!
The arrows are a simple tool take works for direction through out the website.
Great graphic illustrations. Simple information that I could read in a snapshot!

BUT a box is a box is a box - think Donald Judd
Forget the bad English - but definitely a good website.
The box as a button is the new trend!
Yes it organizes information.

A great display of statistical information in an accessible way.

THEN THERE IS THE BAD .....
Then I have to agree - BAD!!
I wonder why all reggae website have to have the same colors, same design and 1960's - 70's look.

Gotta Love Barbie (1959  -  Ruth Handler (co-founder of Mattel), whose own daughter was called Barbara.
Girl friendly website that is simple to use interactive & obviously BARBIE

The ultimate Pink shoe, very interactive and simple for the educated runner or young generation that wants the best of everything.

OR a big mac  - (1968 - Jim Delligatti, Pittsburgh)
This British website is trying to make the junk food Jiant become an educated food choice.
What is that about?
Hey it appeals to me - every button I touched didn't select anything.
I think you have to have to understand  sarcasm  - not an American thing?

The Art of Web Design

What students think.

Users don’t read, they scan.
Analyzing a web-page, users search for some fixed points or anchors which would guide them through the content of the page.

A web-page should be obvious and self-explanatory.
When you’re creating a site, your job is to get rid of the question marks — the decisions users need to make consciously, considering pros, cons and alternatives.

F Pattern
  • Users first read in a horizontal movement, usually across the upper part of the content area. This initial element forms the F's top bar.
  • Next, users move down the page a bit and then read across in a second horizontal movement that typically covers a shorter area than the previous movement. This additional element forms the F's lower bar.
  • Finally, users scan the content's left side in a vertical movement. Sometimes this is a fairly slow and systematic scan that appears as a solid stripe on an eye tracking heat map. Other times users move faster, creating a spottier heat map. This last element forms the F's stem.

What is the most important piece of information on the page?

Look at different ways to create users that are simple and direct.

Organize the information so the user does not get confused

Good Design

Good Web design is about information.  When learning good design practice, the user should be led around the screen by the designer. It is about hierarchy -  about how much visual weight do different parts of your design have? What is THE most important piece of information.

color, hue, saturation

WHAT ABOUT COLOR?

It's all about color
What a lot of Menu Bars

Good or Bad Design Information architecture is the term used to describe the structure of a system, that is the way information is grouped, the navigation methods and terminology are used within the system. An effective information architecture allows people to step logically through a system, confident they are getting closer to the information they require.

Information architecture is made up of:

Business/Context
Understanding an organizations’ business objectives, politics, culture, technology, resources and constraints is essential before considering development of the information architecture.

Content
The most effective method for understanding the quantity and quality of content (i.e. functionality and information) proposed for a system is to conduct a content inventory.

Users
An effective information architecture must reflect the way people think about the subject matter.
